This policy applies to the mobile application Reporter Briefing
(bundle ID uk.ac.erg.breathe-cities-briefing), operated by
ecoquity.tech in association with the Environmental Research Group (ERG),
Imperial College London.

1. What Reporter Briefing does
Reporter Briefing is a personal exposure app oriented to journalism and field briefings. It records a timeline of journeys and stops, estimates exposure to common air pollutants (NO₂, O₃, PM₁₀, PM2.5), and can export a selected day’s segments for editorial or analysis use. It is an environmental information tool for journalists on the briefing walk. It does not provide medical diagnosis or treatment.
2. Data we process
- Location — including background location while recording is enabled.
- Motion / activity — to improve moving vs stationary detection and transport inference.
- Places you confirm — including Google Places lookups you initiate.
- Timeline & exposure results — stored primarily on your device.
- Exports you create — CSV / GeoJSON files you choose to share via the system share sheet (you control the destination).
- App diagnostics — optional crash or performance signals if enabled in a given build.
3. Where data is stored
Timeline data is stored on your device in an app-specific database. Exposure scores may be cached on device. Exported files exist only where you save or send them.
4. Data we send off the device
- Timed coordinates and travel mode for confirmed segments to our exposure service (HTTPS) to compute pollutant averages and doses.
- Map requests to Mapbox when maps are shown.
- Place search queries to Google Places when you search for places.
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your timeline for third-party advertising. If you export a day and share it with an editor, newsroom system, or third party, that sharing is under your control and subject to their policies.
5. Why we process this data
- To provide recording, timeline, exposure, and export features.
- To operate and secure the service.
- To meet legal obligations where applicable.
Legal bases under UK GDPR typically include performance of a contract and, for background location, your consent via iOS permission prompts.
6. Retention
On-device data remains until you delete the app or clear its data. We do not run Reporter Briefing as a long-term cloud archive of your GPS history. Third-party processors retain technical logs per their policies.
7. Your choices & rights
- Revoke location/motion permissions in iOS Settings.
- Stop recording in-app when you do not want further tracking.
- Delete the app to remove on-device timeline data.
- Be careful what you include in day exports before sharing them externally.
- UK GDPR rights (access, erasure, etc.) and ICO complaints may apply — contact us to exercise them.

8. Children
This app is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect children’s data for this product.
9. Changes
We may update this policy as the product evolves. The effective date will change; see also ecoquity.tech/reporter-briefing.
